The best time to visit Labengki has no single agreed answer. Modelled data for Kendari makes September the driest month, one operator favours April to October and another favours October to mid June. Choose by what matters most to you, keep a spare day for the return boat, and expect stops to change with tide and weather.
When is the best time to visit Labengki?
Nobody can name one best month and defend it. Climate data describes Kendari on land, the islands have no marine station figures to compare, and the people selling trips contradict each other. Here is who says what, and the limit on each claim:
| Source | Kind | What it says | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weather Spark | Modelled climate data | May wettest, September driest; early July to mid September rated best for general outdoor activity | Kendari only; a tourism score and not sea state |
| Wikipedia | Encyclopedia | Tropical rainforest climate; heavier rain December to July, moderate August to November | Kendari only |
| BMKG forecast, reported by afu.id | Press report of a forecast | 2026 dry season starting mid July in Kendari and North Konawe, early August in parts of North Konawe | One year only |
| Asik Travel | Operator | Drier, calmer months around April to October; no month when trips could not run at all | Sells trips |
| Sulawesi Eco Adventure | Operator | Dry season February to May and September to October; rain and rougher seas otherwise; visitable all year | Sells trips; May is the wettest month in the Kendari model |
| Travelmarbles | Travel feature, 2018 | Dry season May to October; says Nirwana Resort opens only then | Eight years old; no data given |
| TripTrik | Operator | Islands better from October to mid June | Sells trips; conflicts with most others |
| Voyage in Style | Traveller | Dry season April to November, yet a heavy storm on two of four days in mid August | One trip |
| labengkisombori.com | Operator guide | Declines to name a best month because web answers contradict each other | Sells trips |
The same goes for the best time to visit Sombori, since published trips usually combine both groups. So choose by what matters most to you, using the sections below, and build in slack. Our Labengki Island overview covers the trip itself.
What does climate data show for Kendari?
Weather Spark gives temperatures mostly between 74 and 90 °F (about 23 to 32 °C) with sea temperature between 82 and 85 °F (about 28 to 29 °C). So warmth is not the deciding factor in any month. Rain is what shifts. On its model May is the wettest month and September the driest, and its tourism score favours early July to mid September.
Wikipedia classes Kendari as tropical rainforest, with heavier rain from December to July, moderate rain from August to November and an average high of 31 °C. Both sources lean the same way on one thing: the later months of the year look drier in the city. A tropical rainforest label still means rain remains possible at any time.
Keep the limits in mind. These are figures for a city on the mainland, and modelled at that. Use the numbers to compare months against each other. They will not tell you what your crossing will feel like.
Why do sellers name different months?
They do not explain the gap, and each of them sells trips. Asik Travel favours April to October and adds that its crew have not had a month when trips could not run at all. TripTrik says the islands are better from October to mid June, which covers much of the period Asik Travel treats as less favourable. Labengkisombori.com refuses to pick. The two windows conflict across much of the year, and this guide will not stitch them into a single recommendation.
A traveller's story adds a warning about tidy labels. Voyage in Style says the dry season runs April to November, yet reports a heavy storm on two of four days in mid August that stopped their small boat reaching some spots. One trip proves little about August, but it does show that a dry-season label does not protect a short itinerary.
The official-sounding start dates shift as well. A press report of the BMKG forecast said the 2026 dry season would begin in Kendari and North Konawe in mid July, with parts of North Konawe in early August. That is months later than the April start in the operator and traveller accounts, and it applied to one year only.
How much does wind matter?
Published wind figures are for the city on land, so wind at sea around the islands stays unknown. Weather Spark gives July as the windiest month at Kendari and December as the calmest. Those are land wind figures, so they cannot be converted into wave heights at sea. They do raise an awkward point: the months with the strongest tourism score overlap with the windiest period on the same model. That overlap is about land data for the city, and it says nothing about the sea at Labengki.
The sea matters most on the longest exposed part of the trip. Asik Travel says the open-water run from Tanasa is that stretch, and it cautions that the boat back to the mainland is at the mercy of conditions. For what that means in practice, read is Labengki safe and plan your flights after reading our Kendari stopover notes.
Which stops are most affected by season?
According to Asik Travel, guides swap exposed sites for sheltered ones in the wet season, and our lagoons guide names the two stops it says are most likely to drop. So a wet-season trip may still run while missing the stop you came for. Tide decides the rest: read Tobelo Lake Labengki before you pin a trip on that lake, because the sources there suggest tide can rule it out in any month.
Wildlife timing is even less certain. WWF Indonesia's 2016 report ties whale sharks in provincial waters to certain months, mainly the calm season. That is not specific to these islands, and it gives you no odds of seeing one.
Does anything close for part of the year?
Possibly the resort, on one old report. Travelmarbles said in 2018 that Nirwana Resort opens only during the May to October dry season. No newer source here repeats that, and it may no longer hold, so ask the resort about your exact dates before you buy flights. If you have your heart set on an overwater villa, this is the question to settle first.
Boats are described differently. Sulawesi Eco Adventure says departures are available year-round, while warning of rain and rougher seas outside February to May and September to October. Asik Travel likewise says no month has stopped its trips outright. Neither source says anything about whether homestays close, so ask your host.
When is the festival?
ANTARA dates the 2026 Festival Labengki to 29 to 31 May, on Labengki Kecil. May is also the wettest month in the Kendari model, a good example of how events and rainfall tables pull in different directions. The date has moved before, so our page on Labengki Kecil gives the history and you should check the current year's announcement.
How should you choose your dates?
Match the month to your priority and accept the trade-off:
| If you care most about | What the sources offer | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Least rain in the model | September, per Weather Spark | Kendari data only, and rain is still possible |
| Calmer land wind | December, per Weather Spark | Falls in the heavier-rain period Wikipedia describes |
| Keeping lagoon stops on the list | Outside the wet season, per Asik Travel | Tide can still remove Tobelo Lake |
| Festival atmosphere | Check the current year; May in 2026 | Date moves; ask about rooms early |
Whichever you pick, three habits lower the risk:
- Keep a spare night in Kendari before your flight home. Asik Travel suggests a hotel night before and after the trip.
- Choose four days over three if you can, so one lost stop does not ruin the trip. Asik Travel says four days feels much less rushed. Our Labengki Sombori itinerary page compares lengths.
- Ask your provider, close to departure, what happens to the plan and the money if the boat cannot sail.
What else do people ask about Labengki weather?
What is the weather like at Labengki?
Warm all year, judging by Kendari data, the nearest available reference. Weather Spark gives temperatures mostly between 74 and 90 °F there. Rain is possible in any month, and that city data does not describe the islands.
When is the dry season near Kendari?
Sources differ. Weather Spark makes September the driest month, Asik Travel names April to October as drier and calmer, and a press report of the BMKG forecast put the 2026 start in mid July.
Which month has the least rain in Kendari?
September, according to Weather Spark's modelled data. This applies to the city and is not a measurement at Labengki or Sombori.
Which month is wettest in Kendari?
May, according to Weather Spark. Wikipedia describes heavier rain across December to July, so May sits inside a longer wet stretch in that account.
Can you visit Labengki in the rainy season?
Operator Asik Travel says its crew have not had a month when trips could not run at all, though guides swap exposed sites for sheltered ones and some lagoons may drop. Confirm how your provider handles a cancelled crossing.

How do I reach the desk?
Have dates in mind? Send them to the desk on WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563 or at bd@juaraholding.com and ask what the sources say about that period and what to ask a provider. Nobody can forecast your crossing, so treat any answer as guidance. A request may lead to a paid booking, which is why our commercial interest is disclosed, and only a written offer sets terms.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and how you plan to reach Kendari. The desk replies in writing.
