By Labengki Island Editorial Desk

The Sombori Islands are a cluster of karst islets and lagoons in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, across the provincial line from Labengki. Travel accounts describe short viewpoint climbs, sea caves, lagoons and reef. Most see them on boat days from Labengki, because one operator reports only a few village homestays and no hotels on Sombori.

Where are the Sombori Islands?

They lie at the southeastern edge of Central Sulawesi, facing the north of Southeast Sulawesi. The travel blog The World Travel Guy places Sombori in the far southeast corner of Central Sulawesi province. According to operator Asik Travel, it sits about 20 km north of Labengki, across the provincial border in Morowali. WWF Indonesia notes that North Konawe, the Southeast Sulawesi regency that holds Labengki, borders Morowali, which helps explain why the two island groups are so often treated as one place. Our Labengki Island overview covers the group to the south.

For a rough map pin, OpenStreetMap geocodes Pulau Sombori near -3.2838, 122.4265 and the village it spells Mbokitta near -3.2732, 122.4089. That is approximate community data: good enough for finding the area on a phone map, not for navigation. The route in from Kendari has its own page on how to get to Sombori, and most published trips start with the Kendari to Labengki crossing.

The name does three jobs. "Sombori Island" usually means one island, Pulau Sombori. "The Sombori Islands" means the wider cluster of islets and lagoons. "Sombori Islands District" is an administrative unit, covered in the next section. A listing that only says "Sombori" could mean any of them, so ask a seller to name the stops on the route.

Which province and district do they belong to?

The province is Central Sulawesi. The Central Sulawesi tourism office lists the islands among the attractions of Morowali Regency, and that official listing outweighs travel writing that says otherwise. The travel blog Jonny Melon describes Sombori as off the coast of Southeast Sulawesi. The slip is easy to understand, since trips start from Kendari, which is in that province.

The district depends on the date of whatever you are reading. A Directorate General of Taxes article dated 22 July 2019 places the conservation area in Menui Kepulauan district. Wikipedia records a Sombori Islands District formed in 2022 from parts of Menui Islands and South Bungku districts. Anything written before 2022 predates that district. Wikipedia carries less weight than a government record, so look for a current official document if you need the district name on paperwork.

What does the conservation status actually cover?

Less is settled here than brochures suggest. The tourism office calls the islands a marine tourism conservation area. The 2019 tax directorate article gives the Sombori conservation area 41,342 hectares and 34 island clusters. Indonesian Wikipedia attaches the same hectare figure to the Morowali regional marine conservation area under Regent Decree 188.45/SK.0283/DKP/2013. One number, two labels, so do not read it as a measured boundary around Sombori alone.

At national level, the state legal database lists Ministerial Decree 52/KEPMEN-KP/2019 on the conservation area for Morowali, North Morowali and surrounding waters, effective 27 November 2019 and marked in force. That database entry does not name Sombori, so it does not tell you whether a given lagoon sits inside it or what zone applies. Treat every stop as protected water in practice and ask your crew about local rules before swimming, anchoring or flying anything.

What is there to see around Sombori?

Mostly limestone from above and water from inside it. The provincial office also mentions reef and fish for diving and snorkelling, but the stops below are what trip writers talk about. Names and counts vary by author.

Three of these have more depth elsewhere on this site: the Puncak Kayangan viewpoint, the Sombori caves and Mbokita village. Rumah Nenek also carries a story worth knowing: Explore relates a local legend that it is named after a fisherwoman who kept a whale shark in the water for two months. Enjoy it as folklore, not natural history. For the enclosed water south of the border, see the Labengki lagoons, and for reef reports on both sides, Labengki snorkeling.

Plan for a day of short hops rather than one long stop. Voyage in Style describes Sombori as a day trip from Labengki, so a good share of the day goes on the water and the crew's choice of stops will shape what you see. If one sight is the reason for your trip, name it before you pay. Sellers' formats are compared under Labengki Sombori tours.

Can you sleep on Sombori?

You can, but it takes planning, and it is not the default. Asik Travel says there are no resorts or hotels on Sombori, only a handful of village homestays, and that every Sombori package it knows of sleeps on Labengki. Explore agrees that the only real sleeping option is a homestay arranged locally or through an agent, and describes visits as three or four-day tours with homestay nights.

The two accounts fit together, with one catch for buyers. A trip described as "Sombori, homestay" can mean a homestay on Labengki. If a night among the Sombori lagoons is the point of your trip, ask for the village name in writing. For the wider picture, see where to stay around Labengki.

Why is it called the Raja Ampat of Sulawesi?

Explore and Kompas use the nickname, and no source explains it beyond the scenery. Explore uses the phrase "the Raja Ampat of Sulawesi" for Sombori. Kompas gives neighbouring Labengki the nickname "miniature Raja Ampat". ANTARA once quoted the then Central Sulawesi governor asking the regent to develop Sombori and calling it no less beautiful than Raja Ampat, a remark from a politician promoting the province.

The most useful version comes from a seller. Asik Travel says the karst is comparable but the diving is not, with Raja Ampat having richer reefs and dive infrastructure. So come for the shape of the land. If reefs are the main draw, read about diving at Labengki first.

How does phone signal work around Sombori?

Assume you will be out of contact for the day. Asik Travel says signal is patchy on Labengki and mostly absent around Sombori. Save offline maps, your booking details and your seller's emergency contact before leaving Kendari, and tell someone at home when you expect to be back in range. Practical detail on networks and charging is on the page about power, signal and cash at Labengki.

What else do people ask about the Sombori Islands?
