Kendari to Labengki means a short drive and then a chartered or tour boat. Operator Asik Travel describes the usual route as about 40 minutes by road to Tanasa harbour, then about two and a half hours by wooden boat. Other published crossing times differ widely, so plan around the harbour and boat you are actually offered.

How do you get from Kendari to Labengki?

The Ministry of Tourism's Jadesta listing says Labengki is reachable only by sea, so every plan has the same three legs. If you are still deciding whether the crossing is worth it, our Labengki Island overview sets out what is at the other end.

  1. Fly to Kendari. Wikipedia describes Haluoleo Airport (KDI) as a domestic airport outside the city limits, in Ranomeeto, South Konawe. A traveller arriving from abroad connects through another Indonesian airport first.
  2. Drive to the harbour. Asik Travel gives about 40 minutes to Tanasa. The World Travel Guy and Voyage in Style each report a 45-minute drive to the harbour, and the travel blog jonnymelon.com reported about an hour by car in 2018.
  3. Cross by boat. This is the leg where sources part company, and the rest of this page deals with it.

Road times in those accounts differ by about 20 minutes. Water times run from about one hour by speedboat in one traveller report to about five hours in Kompas, so the boat is the leg to ask about.

Which harbours do boats use?

Tanasa, in Soropia, is the usual choice among operators, according to Asik Travel. ANTARA adds a press record: it reported boats carrying visitors out of Nii Tanasa port, Konawe Regency, in May 2023. Tanasa is the only departure point here with both an operator and a news report behind it.

Do your shopping in Kendari. Asik Travel describes Tanasa as a working harbour without a waiting room or any useful shop. Do not rely on a map pin for the port. Ask for the meeting point in words, and for a phone number at that end.

Watch the vague wording in other sources. Jadesta says "Kendari dock" and Kompas says "Kendari port". If an offer says only "from Kendari", ask which of the harbours above it means, because the table shows how much that one word can change.

Why do published crossing times differ so much?

Because they describe different harbours, different boats and different days. These are the figures in print, each with its own source. None of them is a measured timetable.

Four things explain part of the gap:

  • Boat type. The World Travel Guy's own account shows a threefold difference between speedboat and wooden boat.
  • Starting point. A boat leaving the city harbour has further to go than one leaving Tanasa, by Asik Travel's figures.
  • Sea state. jonnymelon.com ties its three hours directly to conditions on the water.
  • What is being described. The BKSDA Sultra figure refers to the Teluk Lasolo park as a whole.

That still leaves one plain conflict. Jadesta gives about two hours from Kendari dock, while Kompas gives about five hours from Kendari port. ANTARA's three and a half hours sits between them. If you are offered a wooden boat, compare The World Travel Guy's three hours with Voyage in Style's two and ask your provider.

Is there a road route through North Konawe?

Yes, though few published trips use it. Come2Indonesia's five-day programme drives north from Kendari, stops at the Wawolesea hot springs (it spells them Wawelasea), then boards a wooden boat at Lasolo village. Indonesia Tourism gives 142 km and about four hours by road to North Konawe, then a speedboat. BKSDA Sultra, describing the park, gives 105 km and about three and a half hours to Lasolo district, so even the road distance is disputed. A 2018 feature on Travelmarbles names a third start, Toli Toli village, about an hour by road with a two-hour speedboat ride. Jadesta also lists about one hour from the district capital. No source says how much open water a northern start avoids, so ask how the time splits before you choose it for a first day.

What time do boats leave for Labengki?

Usually in the morning, by the accounts here, and no source shows a timetable. Operator Sulawesi Eco Adventure says most boats leave between 8 AM and 10 AM, which it describes as generally when the sea is calmer. That sets up its first afternoon at Blue Lagoon and Pasir Panjang beach, and our Labengki lagoons page explains what that stop involves. Published first days vary around that window: Tournesia lists a 07:00 pickup and an 11:00 boat, Asik Travel an 08:00 pickup, and Voyage in Style reports leaving at 12:30 on one trip. A pickup time is not a sailing time, so ask for both, and ask who decides if the morning sea looks wrong.

Is there a public ferry to Labengki?

Not on any daily basis, according to Asik Travel, which says you cross on a charter or on a tour boat. You will not find a ferry timetable or a ticket office in any of these accounts. If someone in Kendari offers you a seat on a local boat, treat it as a private arrangement and ask the questions further down.

In practice, the crossing is bought as part of a trip or as a charter. The price table on this page lists published trip rates with their sources. Two of those rows are shared trips listed for Indonesian citizens only, so read the note beside each row and open its source before comparing them.

Can you do it as a day trip?

Asik Travel rules it out, blaming the crossing in both directions. It sells multi-day trips, so check the sums yourself. On its own figures, 40 minutes plus two and a half hours each way comes to more than six hours of travel before a single stop. Even Jadesta's shorter two hours leaves four hours on the water. On the Kompas figure it would be about ten. Our guide to trip length looks at what each extra day buys. Adding the Sombori Islands stretches the day further, since Voyage in Style puts them two hours beyond Labengki by boat. Sellers' formats are compared under Labengki Sombori tours, and the rooms at the far end under where to stay on Labengki.

How should you time your flight into Kendari?

Land the day before. Asik Travel starts its trips with an 08:00 pickup in Kendari and says no same-day flight gets you there in time. Tournesia publishes an even earlier start for its open trip, with a 07:00 pickup. Another operator may run a later boat, as Voyage in Style's 12:30 departure suggests, but get that in writing before you book a tight connection.

Our Kendari stopover guide lists the carriers Wikipedia names for each route and covers the night in town. Asik Travel says Makassar is about an hour away with flights every day, and that Jakarta flights run direct. Airlines drop and add routes, so confirm with the carrier before you build a plan.

What should you sort out before boarding?

Some of this comes from named sources, and some is our own checklist.

  • Seasickness. Asik Travel advises taking a tablet before you board, and it calls the open water after Tanasa the most exposed part of the run.
  • Sun. The same operator suggests a long-sleeved shirt and a hat.
  • Snorkel kit. Sort out a mask before the harbour. Labengki snorkeling compares what sellers include.
  • Noise. Voyage in Style warns that old engines on local boats are very noisy and suggests earplugs.
  • Paperwork. Ask the operator directly about the boat's licence, coast guard clearance and insurance, and ask how many life jackets are on board.
  • Bad weather. Ask who decides whether the boat sails, and what happens to your money and your onward flight if it does not. Our page on whether Labengki is safe goes further.

What else do people ask about this crossing?

How far is Labengki from Kendari?

In 2024 the Basarnas rescue office in Kendari gave ANTARA a figure of about 38 nautical miles from its dock to Labengki waters. That is an agency's distance to an area of sea, given in an incident report, not a published route length from Tanasa.

How long is the boat from Kendari to Labengki?

It depends on harbour and boat. Asik Travel gives about two and a half hours by wooden boat from Tanasa, and four to five hours from the city harbour. Kompas gives about five hours from Kendari port. Ask for the time on your actual boat.

Is there a public boat to Labengki?

Not one you can plan around, according to Asik Travel, which says every crossing is a chartered or tour boat. Ask in Kendari if you want to test that, but do not build a trip on it.

How long does it take to get to Labengki after landing?

Allow a night in Kendari first. Tournesia's published first day then runs from a 07:00 pickup to a 13:00 arrival, which is six hours from pickup to island on that one operator's timing.

Does a speedboat shorten the crossing?

The World Travel Guy reports about one hour by speedboat against three by wooden boat. That is one traveller, so ask whether a speedboat is available for your date and what it would mean on a rough day.
