By Labengki Island Editorial Desk
A Kendari stopover belongs in most Labengki plans. Operator Asik Travel says no same-day flight meets its morning pickup, and it suggests a hotel night before and after the boat. Use that first evening to get cash, sort out a Telkomsel SIM and buy what you forgot, because the harbour offers little.
Why does a Kendari stopover matter?
Because the boat leaves from somewhere else, and early. Asik Travel tells visitors to land the day before. Its Labengki and Sombori guide says most operators leave from Tanasa in Soropia, about 40 minutes from Kendari by road, followed by a wooden boat crossing of about two and a half hours. Add the airport road and a late-morning landing leaves little margin, and other sources give longer crossings. They are compared on the Kendari to Labengki page.
That pickup belongs to one operator, and other sellers may set a different hour. So ask for the pickup time first and book your flight second. Wikipedia describes Kendari as the capital of Southeast Sulawesi, at about 3.99 S, 122.51 E. For this trip it is a staging point, and this page treats it as one. This page covers one or two nights there, with a short list of side trips further down.
Which flights reach Kendari?
You will land at Kendari airport, formally Haluoleo Airport, code KDI. Wikipedia describes it as a domestic airport, so travellers from abroad should expect to connect through another Indonesian city. It lists these scheduled services, which change often enough that you should check with the carrier before you plan around them.
| From or to | Carriers listed by Wikipedia | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Jakarta | Batik Air, Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Pelita Air, Super Air Jet | Asik Travel also says direct flights run on this route |
| Makassar | Lion Air | Asik Travel says daily flights take about an hour |
| Surabaya | Lion Air | See the warning on stops below |
| Wakatobi | FlyJaya | Useful only if you are combining the two regions |
Read the booking screen closely. Voyage in Style warns that a flight sold as direct from Jakarta or Surabaya may stop in Makassar, and that Makassar may be shown as Ujung Pandang. That is one travel blog's warning, yet it costs nothing to check the number of stops. A stop matters here because a late connection can cost you the evening you were counting on.
The Central Sulawesi tourism office lists a flight of about 45 minutes from Kendari to Morowali, relevant if you are thinking of approaching Sombori from the other side. It is published without a date or a carrier, so confirm it before relying on it. The options are on the how to get to Sombori page.
How far is the airport from the city?
Sources disagree. Wikipedia gives about 25 km and 30 to 40 minutes from the airport to Kendari city, and says the airport lies outside the city limits in Ranomeeto, South Konawe. The operator guide labengkisombori.com also places it at Ranomeeto but says roughly 15 km from the centre.
Wikipedia's own coordinates may explain the gap. It puts the airport at about 4.08 S, 122.42 E, and by our arithmetic that is roughly 14 km in a straight line from the city coordinates above. So the shorter figure may be closer to a straight line and the longer one to the road, though neither source says so. For planning, use the 30 to 40 minutes, which is the figure that affects your evening.
What should you buy in Kendari?
Do your shopping before the harbour. Asik Travel says Tanasa is a working harbour with no waiting room and nowhere useful to buy what you forgot. A short list covers most of what catches people out:
- Cash for the whole trip. Asik Travel says there is no ATM once you leave the city. The Jadesta portal shows ATMs among the village facilities, which conflicts with that. Plan for none, and carry enough for any fees and rentals.
- A working SIM. The operator guide labengkisombori.com names Telkomsel. Buy or activate one while shops are open and you still have signal to test it. Coverage out on the water is a separate question, covered on the power, signal and cash page.
- Personal medicine and toiletries. Bring enough of what you normally use, since you should assume nothing can be bought after this point.
- Snorkel items you rely on. A mask that fits or your own fins are worth sorting out now; the Labengki snorkeling guide compares what sellers include.
- Dry bags and snacks. You will be grateful for both on a long boat crossing.
Language is the other thing to prepare. The World Travel Guy reports that most people in Kendari, like those in the villages, speak very little English. Keep your hotel name, your pickup details and your seller's number written down, and save an offline translation pack while you have a connection.
Where do travellers report staying?
The World Travel Guy suggests Swiss-Belhotel or Claro Hotel Kendari for a stop. That is one traveller's suggestion, and we repeat it as a starting point only. We do not rate hotels. Three practical checks matter more than the brand: whether the hotel is on your seller's pickup route, whether you can check out early enough for the pickup, and whether it will hold spare luggage while you are on the boat. Ask your seller where they usually collect guests before you book a room, because a hotel near the pickup can save you a rushed morning.
How does the return day work?
Treat it as the least certain day of the trip. Asik Travel warns that the return boat depends on the sea, and it suggests another hotel night in Kendari after the islands. So avoid a flight out on the day the boat comes back, however tidy it looks. Ask your seller what happens if the crossing is delayed, and who pays for the extra night if that happens. Read the change and refund rules on your onward ticket with the same question in mind. Here is an outline built from those statements. Change the hours to suit your own seller's times.
| Day | What happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival day | Land at KDI, allow 30 to 40 minutes to the city, get cash and a SIM | Same-day flights do not meet Asik Travel's pickup |
| Boat day | Morning pickup, road to the harbour, then the crossing | Asik Travel names Tanasa as the usual departure point |
| Last island day | Boat back to the harbour and road to the city | The sea sets the timing |
| Spare night | Hotel in Kendari | Protects your flight if the boat runs late |
| Flight day | Allow time for the airport road, then fly | Keeps the sea out of your flight plan |
What can you see around Kendari with a spare day?
Not much in the city itself, by one account. Travelmarbles said in 2018 that Kendari is not really a place to linger, then listed these outings nearby:
- Moramo Waterfall, for swimming in the falls.
- Toronipa, Taipa and Nambo beaches
- Pulau Bungkutoko
- Bokori Island
- Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park
Come2Indonesia adds the Wawolesea hot springs on the road north, which it spells Wawelasea. The Travelmarbles list is eight years old and gives no drive times, so ask your driver what fits. Keep any outing to the arrival day only if your flight lands early, and save the longer ones for after the boat, since a morning pickup leaves no room for a late return.
What is the weather like during a stopover?
Warm and often wet. Weather Spark data for Kendari gives May as the wettest month and September as the driest, with temperatures mostly between 74 and 90 F (about 23 to 32 C) and sea temperature between 82 and 85 F (about 28 to 29 C). This is modelled climate data for the city, not a measurement from the islands. Wikipedia classes Kendari as tropical rainforest climate, with an average high of 31 C. Neither one tells you what the sea will do, so do not use them to pick a crossing day. The best time to visit Labengki guide deals with that question.
What do people ask about Kendari before the boat?
How do you get to Kendari?
Fly to Haluoleo Airport, code KDI. Wikipedia describes it as a domestic airport, with scheduled services listed from Jakarta, Makassar and Surabaya. Travellers from abroad should expect to connect through another Indonesian city first.
Which airlines fly to Kendari?
Wikipedia lists Batik Air, Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Pelita Air and Super Air Jet from Jakarta, Lion Air from Makassar and Surabaya, and FlyJaya to Wakatobi. Confirm current services with each airline.
Are there direct flights from Jakarta to Kendari?
Asik Travel says direct flights run between Jakarta and Kendari. Voyage in Style warns that a flight sold as direct may stop in Makassar, sometimes shown as Ujung Pandang, so check the number of stops on your ticket.
How far is Haluoleo Airport from Kendari city?
Wikipedia says about 25 km and 30 to 40 minutes, while the operator guide labengkisombori.com says roughly 15 km from the centre. Plan on the 30 to 40 minute drive.
How long is the flight from Makassar to Kendari?
About an hour, according to Asik Travel, which also says flights on the route run daily. Check the current timetable with the carrier, since that is an operator's summary and not a schedule.
Do I need to stay overnight in Kendari?
Almost certainly. Asik Travel says no same-day flight meets its pickup and suggests a night before and after the trip. Another seller may run different hours, but the return boat still depends on the sea.
