By Labengki Island Editorial Desk

How to get to Sombori comes down to two approaches: a boat from Labengki, about two hours according to Voyage in Style, or the Morowali side through Bungku, where the Central Sulawesi tourism office publishes road and boat routes without dates. Treat every route on this page as something to confirm locally before you commit money or days to it.
How do most people reach Sombori?
Travel accounts treat Sombori as a boat trip from Labengki, and Labengki itself is reached by boat from the Kendari side. Visitor numbers by route are not published, so "most" is an impression drawn from those accounts. Operator Asik Travel places Sombori about 20 km north of Labengki, across the provincial border in Morowali, Central Sulawesi. Our overview of Labengki Island covers that first base.
That border explains a lot of the confusion. The World Travel Guy puts Sombori in the far southeast corner of Central Sulawesi, and the Central Sulawesi tourism office lists it under Morowali. The travel blog Jonny Melon describes it as off the coast of Southeast Sulawesi, which conflicts with the official listing. WWF Indonesia notes that North Konawe, Labengki's regency, borders Morowali, so the islands are neighbours on the water while the administration splits between two provinces. As a result, the published road and flight details on each side start from different towns.
Names have shifted too. Wikipedia records the Sombori Islands District being formed in 2022 from parts of Menui Islands and South Bungku districts in Morowali Regency, so older sources may say Menui Kepulauan. If a map or a local gives you that older name, ask whether it covers the stop you want.
How long is the boat from Labengki?
The published figure is about two hours. Voyage in Style says Sombori can be visited as a day trip from Labengki on a two-hour boat ride. That is one traveller's account, and no timetable backs it. Asik Travel's distance and Voyage in Style's time come from different sources, so do not work out a boat speed from them. Ask your provider for the expected time on the actual boat, and ask how the day changes if the sea is up.
That crossing, each way, uses a fair part of a day trip. If you want more than a look, compare a return day with a night on the Sombori side, and read the Sombori Islands page on what is there and the power, signal and cash page on what is absent. Getting from Kendari to Labengki first is a separate leg, with its own spread of reports, on the Kendari to Labengki page. That is also the answer to how far Sombori is from Kendari: add the two legs and leave room.
Can you reach Sombori from the Morowali side?
Yes, according to the provincial tourism office, and it is the logical approach if you are already in Central Sulawesi. Bungku is the base the office uses for its routes towards Mbokita, the village covered on our Mbokita village page. This route also means you can reach Sombori without staying on Labengki. You would be working from the office's outline alone, with local arrangements still to make.
Which road and boat routes are published?
All of the following come from the same Central Sulawesi tourism office page, which gives no date for them, so confirm each one locally.
| Leg | Mode | Published time or distance |
|---|---|---|
| Bungku to Tanda Oleo | Road | About 1.5 hours |
| Tanda Oleo to Mbokita | Kantinting boat | About 3 hours |
| Bungku to Molore | Car | About 2.5 hours |
| Molore onward (second route) | Speedboat | About 25 minutes |
| Palu to Kolonodale | Road | About 575 km, 11 hours |
| Poso to Bungku | Road | About 221 km, 6 hours |
Read the two Bungku routes side by side. The Tanda Oleo route adds up to about four and a half hours, most of it in a kantinting, a small local boat. The Molore route adds up to about three hours, with far less time on the water. A boat leg of 25 minutes against one of three hours is a large difference, so ask where the speedboat lands, whether one runs at all on your date, and whether it would need to be chartered. What the office describes is a route, which is not the same as a scheduled service. Tanda Oleo and Molore are named without further detail, so ask locally about boats and schedules.
The long-distance figures need similar care. The Palu figure stops at Kolonodale, and no leg from there to the islands is published. The Poso figure does reach Bungku. If you are planning from Palu, the published lines give you a day of road and an open question, so plan on sorting the final stage locally.
Are there flights to Morowali?
The same office lists flights of about 45 minutes from Kendari to Morowali and about one hour from Makassar to Morowali, without a date or a carrier. Check them against a current booking source before building a plan on them. The page does not describe the transfer from an airfield to Bungku or the harbour, so add that as an unknown.
What protected status applies on the way?
The office labels Sombori a marine tourism conservation area. Two legal records sit in the background. Indonesian Wikipedia says the Morowali regional marine conservation area rests on Regent Decree 188.45/SK.0283/DKP/2013, and our Sombori Islands page covers its size. The state legal database lists Ministerial Decree 52/KEPMEN-KP/2019 on the Morowali, North Morowali and surrounding waters conservation area. That entry does not name Sombori, so do not assume the islands sit inside it or that a particular zone applies. Ask locally in Morowali whether a permit or local charge applies.
How to get to Sombori: which route suits which traveller?
- Already on Labengki: the boat is the obvious choice. Ask for the time, the turnaround and the wet-weather plan.
- Starting in Kendari with limited days: go through Labengki unless you have confirmed a Morowali flight and a boat at the far end. A Labengki and Sombori itinerary shows how the days stack up.
- Already in Morowali or Bungku: try the office's routes, starting with a local enquiry about the Molore speedboat and the Tanda Oleo kantinting.
- Coming overland from Palu or Poso: this suits someone with spare days and tolerance for unknowns. Allow for a long road day before any boat.
Whichever way you choose, settle your onward boat before you leave signal behind, because you may not be able to arrange it from the islands.
